Sunderland crowned ‘Best Achieving Council’

Our partners at Sunderland City Council have been awarded ‘Best Achieving Council at the prestigious MJ Awards 2012 held on 21st June.

The award is given in recognition of real performance improvements across a local authority. Sunderland were shortlisted, before senior members of staff gave a presentation to the judging panel on why they were deserving of the award.

The MJ Awards celebrate the best practice, innovation and achievements of local government across the UK. The council’s entry focussed around how, by working with the commitment and support of elected members, trade unions, managers and employees we’ve successfully protected one of the city’s major sources of employment avoiding making compulsory redundancies and embarking on a ground breaking programme of improvement through innovative service redesign. The submission talked about the Sunderland Way of Working and how it has helped improve services and meet enormous savings targets with a commitment to no mass redundancies, the value of the Community Leadership programme and robust planning for the future.
